Bruce Johansen is receiving acclaim as a
modern artist after a successful career in the film and television
industries. His dramatic acrylics and oils are known for going “beyond
the canvas” in capturing the unique essence of color and form.
Johansen grew up in the San Francisco Bay area. After two years of
undergraduate study at Antioch College, Ohio he subsequently graduated
from San Francisco State University with a B.A. in Communications
while working at KSFR FM and KDFC FM in San Francisco and KCRA in
Sacramento. After graduation he moved to Paris where he was captivated
by the great French impressionists and modern art movement. This is
where he began a lifelong passion for painting in various media. To
support himself, he worked as a voice-over artist in Paris and Rome
for various European studios and production companies. His voice may
be heard on over 1000 films, including A MAN AND A WOMAN.
Bruce returned to the states in the early 70's
where he continued his career as Vice President and General Manager
of KBSC TV, Los Angeles and then as an executive in television production
and distribution with Multimedia Entertainment. He was ultimately
responsible for international sales of DONAHUE, SALLY JESSY RAPHAEL
and JERRY SPRINGER.
He recently retired as President and CEO of the
National Association of Television Program Executives (NATPE) in
Los Angeles, a trade association representing executives in the
production, distribution and marketing of television programming
worldwide.
Over the years he perfected his personal painting
style using a unique combination of bold colors and designs integrated
with subtle imagery. His work is widely collected, especially by
the television and entertainment communities. His pieces have earned
praise from collectors the world over, and are displayed in homes
throughout Europe, Austral-Asia and the United States.
Johansen currently resides at his home
in the historic Old Las Palmas area of Palm Springs, where he is
active on the boards of several commnity organizations. He also
spends part of his time in a restored farmhouse in the southwest
of France in the Ariège near Carcassonne which is available
for vacation rental (Montplaisir).
These diverse environments offer inspiration and are clearly reflected
in his work.
